Malgré les 30 années précédentes de mondialisation active, il y a des signes évidents de protectionnisme national tant dans les pays industrialisés que dans les États qui sont encore en train de les rattraper. Seulement, l’accent est désormais mis sur d’autres technologies.Selon un rapport réalisé par le Boston Consulting Group et Hello Tomorrow, les technologies profondes peuvent « transformer le monde comme l’a fait Internet ». Les investissements dans ce domaine aux États-Unis ont quadruplé depuis 2016 dans des secteurs tels que la biologie synthétique, les matériaux avancés, la photonique et l’électronique, les drones et la robotique, et l’informatique quantique, en plus de l’intelligence artificielle.
